Pseudorandom number generators

It's a well-known programming fact that computers do exactly and only what you tell them to do ( ignoring, possibly, the incidence of cosmic rays ).  This fact makes it impossible for a computer to produce a truly random number since, given a program's particular starting state and inputs, the computer will always produce the same output - so if one were to know the starting state and inputs one would always be able to predict the output state.  Truly random processes cannot be predicted in this way. Despite this, computers are used constantly to produce "random" behavior, from online poker websites to monte carlo simulators to photo screensavers that always show the wrong photo at the wrong time.  To generate these to-human-eyes-random effects, programmers use what are known as pseudorandom number generators , which algorithmically produce numbers which are hard to predict if you do not know the initial inputs (known as seeds). In August, like every hippie/tech bro ever, I eloped at Burning Man.  Here's a photo my campmate 8 took at the end of the week where the burned the chapel my wife and I were married in: The power of fire as a symbol of change and the human spirit is overused.  I mean, I did get married at an entire festival named after the the idea.  But it's overused for a reason - there's very little that so dramatically represents moving on from the old, cleansing yourself of the past and creating something new and powerful and beautiful.  The man burns and in the destruction of the self we see the creation of light and beauty. Do Not Pass Go

When I was in middle school, I found a bunch of books at my local library that explained how to create games for the Atari console in  BASIC .  This was my first introduction to coding. BASIC is a great first language to learn to the extent that, as its name implies, it is an extremely basic programming language and is easy to understand (as you'll be able to tell after reading this post, it is not a good way to learn how to program in general, at least if your goal is to use modern programming languages). BASIC is also based off of  FORTRAN II , which is of course based off of FORTRAN, which is the language that invented the GOTO statement. The GOTO statement takes its inspiration from the most fundamental of computers, the Turing machine.  Turing machines are an abstraction in which a head reads and writes ones and zeros from an infinite tape of individual cells.
